Kendra Gallery: Dynamic Art Space in Seminyak

Kendra Gallery is one of the great additions to the vibrant art scene in Seminyak, serving as a unique tailored space where art-loving travellers can drop by to browse through the vibrant works on display, and where like-minded visitors mingle with the creators behind the artworks at any of its featured exhibition openings. The art space was conceived to promote contemporary art by Indonesian and international artists, on a mission to foster dialogue through its presentation of many different cultures from across the globe.

Since opening in 2008, the art space’s featured exhibitions have highlighted established artists alongside budding and upcoming ones, creating a place for mutual feedback and support between different genres and generations. The brainchild of art lover Bruno Wauters, (who is also a shareholder of the Uma Sapna Villas in Seminyak where the gallery is located), Kendra gallery functions beyond a mere art space; its library also serves as a meeting venue and workspace option for villa guests. Neverthless, the gallery has proven an inspirational showcase open for public and for all to admire.

A great place to escape the hectic traffic of downtown Seminyak, Kendra Gallery is within a 10-minute walk to Jalan Laksmana that is lined with world-class restaurants and only a short taxi ride away from the fine venues on Jalan Petitenget, the likes of Sardine, Metis and Hu’u. The gallery is located on the small and quiet Jalan Drupadi, set in a leafy garden setting with a well-manicured lawn. This airy courtyard serves as an open gathering venue during exhibition evenings, where guests admire the serene setting beside a lily pond and calming water features. The courtyard’s composition changes with each exhibition theme. One night you might encounter a striking installment in the middle of the lawn, while on a different visit the main gallery might feature a different lighting tone to suit the corresponding artworks’ moods.

Step into the shade of the large shelter and onto the dark parquet flooring; first you’ll be greeted by the alfresco terrace layout of the Deus Café. Further inside is the gorgeous and spacious showroom nicknamed ‘velocita bohemienne’. This ‘speed house’ is where all the exciting items are shown off, from vintage dirt-track racing helmets and clothing of all sorts, all laid out behind a red-brick counter where a bunch of curios and photo frames fill a pop art wall. But the main attractions here are the vintage bikes, spread out in the showroom’s centre and corners.

Paintings and wall art have proved especially popular at Kendra, with young Indonesian artists representing their traditional street art as part of the world pop art surrealist movement. A unique collection of puppetry is another winning highlight, with an Indonesian puppet group presenting great examples of creative and surrealistic puppet designs. Along with the selected pieces from each exhibition shown at the gallery, Kendra also has its own assortment of rare works on display.

Kendra’s own collection includes various creations by over 70 artists. Inside you will see oil paintings of local artist Agung Darmayuda, the unique watercolour lines by Agung Kurniawan and his quirky wall art installations made of iron, while surreal stoneware objects crafted by Ahadiat Joedawinata also occasionally capture your eye. Renowned Italian artist Filippo Sciascia, who works between Bali and Milan, also has his works displayed here. There are enough good reads to keep you inspired within its library, and the relaxing spaces, indoors and out, make it a great spot to escape to from the Seminyak frenzy.
